Main Task

For my main task, i've decided im going to do the print task, which is a music magazine. I have chosen to do this because i love music, and i often buy music magazines, so i have a good understanding of what to expect in a music magazine. The two main magazines i always buy are, Kerrang and NME.

NME: (New Musical Express), has been published weekly since 1952. The magazine presents new music, and reviews of things such as gigs, new albums, bands etc. The public also have the chance to co-operate with the magazine by sending in emails and photos.
It doesn't really have a perticuler genre of music, although it focus's mainly on indie & new un-signed.
I would say it was aimed at a wide target audience. But people who have a big interest in music would be most likely to buy it.

Kerrang: Kerrang is another music magazine i buy regularly. However, Kerrang focus's mainly on Rock, Metal, Goth & Punk. It was first published in 1981, AC/DC were the first band to appear on the front cover. I would say Kerrang's aimed at 16-30 year olds. The magazine has a similar format to NME inside, public can write in, poster specials and special editions are published from time to time.

Preliminary Task (contents page)

This is my contents page for my Sixth Form magazine. I used a graffiti style font once again to appeal to teenagers, and the younger generation. The other font looks like handwritting, which relates well to school life.
The pictures are of actual students, which gives a good impression of the students. I also put the Chew Valley cress amongst the pictures, to represent the school.

Preliminary Task, (front cover)

This is my final idea for a magazine front cover. The magazine is aimed at Chew Valley sixth form, and therefore the age range it suits is 16 - 18.

I think it is extremely suitable for its target audience because of its informal and innovative style. For example, I crossed the word "school" out with what looks like a red biro, and added "...Sixth Form" underneath. This looks like graffiti, which is representitive of modern teenagers. It also gives a young "hip" outlook - which is the desired effect of the magazine on the young audience.

I took the main picture on a basic camera, and edited it using paint.net. I thought it would be suitiable to take pictures of the sixth form, so its relatable.

The school would distribute my magazine, and offer it to Sixth Form on a weekly basis.
My magazines main aim is to deliver weekly information to Sixth Form. All information inside is based on Sixth Form and main areas of the school.

Roland Barthes & Ferdinand De Saussure and possible idea for cousework (print task).

Roland Barthes (12 November 1915 – 25 March 1980) he was french and a literary theorist, philosopher, and critic. In his lifetime Roland Barthes published seventeen books and lots of articles,

Ferdinand De Saussure was born on November 26, 1857, in Switzerland. He learned Sanskrit, Greek, German, Latin, French, and English. He wrote one book called "Memoir on the Original System of Vowels in the Indo-European Languages". He was a very influencing teacher through out his life, and studied languages.

Im thinking of doing the "print" task for my coursework main piece. I done a DVD cover, and film posters at GCSE and really enjoyed using things such as paint.net, i also felt that my final piece really well.
Because i read the NME and Kerrang all the time, i have a good idea of magazines which suit my music taste, therefor i'd have lots of experiance and ideas to put forward for my own magazine.
I'd definatley do a music magazine focusing on music i love, and take photos including my friends, and maybe my own gig photos i have took so its my own work.

AS Level Media: Speed Meeting

To me, media is: A subject that i really enjoyed at GCSE. My final result was my highest grade overall a B.
I have chosen to study media because: I enjoyed it so much at GCSE, i thought A level would be just as fun and interesting.
The last film i watched was: "500 Days Of Summer" last night at the cinema because it was orange wednesdays, it was pretty rubbish really, but the main actor is very very hot, so it wasnt too bad.
The last CD i bought/track i downloaded was: The last CD i bought was a "The Ramones - The Ramones", but then that was bought for me. The last track i downloaded was probablly Papa Roach - Snakes.
My favourite band/artist is: I literally have MILLIONS. But my top 3 would be, 1. Joy Division 2. The Ramones 3. Babyshambles. Favourite artist's therefor are Ian Curtis, Joey Ramone and PETE DOHERTY who i love more than anything haha!
If i could be in a TV show it would be: The Inbetweeners! As its hilarious and i would just be in constant stiches working with Simon Bird (Will)
My radio us usually tuned to: I dont listen to the radio as i cant stand chart music, but our car radio is Heart
The last magazine i read was: Kerrang. Interview with You Me At Six, so i had to buy it!
I use the internet for: MSN, facebook, gig reviews, youtube, buying gig tickets
The newspaper that i'd be most likely to read is: Ummm, the sun? Because i like the celebrity bit in the middle!
If i was to buy a magazine it would be: The NME & Kerrang
If i had to choose, i would rather be a)a journalist b)a film director c)an advertising executive: A journalist because then i'd have a chance of interviewing Pete Doherty
The song i wish i'd written is: Couldnt pick its too hard, but i love the lyrics to The Libertines - Arbeit mach frei. Any Joy Division song though would be awesome to have written
The advert that has caught my eye recently is: STILL the baby advert when four of them are laughing, it makes me laugh! And the Vimto advert when the berries say "Hello pretttttty ladies!"
If i could interview any celebrity/famous person it would be: Ian Curtis, but if they had to be alive then Pete Doherty or Mark Owen, love love loooove!
If i was a brand i'd be: Topshop

My name is Beth Pike, im 16, and have just started sixth form at Chew Valley School. Im currentley studying Media, Psycology, Sociology and Art.
My main interest is music. I listen to music all the time on a day to day basis and love going to gigs, where the music is live and i have a chance to meet the band - which i love and is amazing in my eyes!
As im always interested in discovering new bands, i buy magazines, Kerrang and The NME weekley, i also watch the music channel Kerrang.
One of my favourite genres of music is " 70's punk/new wave" , so i also watch dvd's & video's,look into websites and read autobiographys/books to find out as much as possible about the band/artist.
So, clearly i use the media alot to satisfy my interests and hobbies.
I also enjoy watching films and modern day sitcoms such as The Inbetweeners as its HILARIOUS. I don't go to the cinema that often anymore though, as i find it really expensive. But whenever theirs a chance of watching a good film i'll take it up!
